War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (signed Gustavus), Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., Evan's Mills, N. C., April 24,1863, in part: "…Gen. Foster seems about to…to do something. All 'Secesh' have been ordered to leave Newbern…on or before April 28. The R. R. towards Kinston is being repaired as rapidly as possible and our pickets advanced accordingly…the Gen. must mean to take and hold Kinston as a kind of base…nearly all the present force…will be required to hold the R. R. line. The Rebs have abandoned the siege of Little Washington. Our forces sent out to pursue them have returned…having accomplished little or nothing…there have been so many reports [from] home…that our men are very indigent. The last report was…of Aaron G. Rathbone…that he was condemned to wear a ball and chain…his crime was theft…Mrs. Rathbone…has written to her son in a very unhappy state of mind asking the particulars and alluding to her own feeble health…the whole is a lie. Rathbone is a good soldier. Has had no trouble and will have none unless he gets liquor…this villainous work…ought to be stopped…Edward was on the 13 inst. at Fairfax Court House working for the Christian Commission…". VG
