War-date Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], Hilton Head, S. C., Aug. 1, 1863, in part: "…we left…Morris Island night before last…I got tired of hearing such noise. It was nothing but Boom, Boom night and day on both sides and…four or five pr day…brought down from our works wounded from the deadly missiles…our Reg. had orders to report to Hilton Head…it was [soon] aboard the "General Hunter"…God has been good in preserving my life until now…while at Morris Island…at night…they shelled our camps as much as they could…the night we came away I saw a young man…belonging to Eighty Fifth Penna. that was struck by a shell. He had one arm taken off just below the elbow. Poor man no hands at all. The next day after the battle of the 10[th July] I took a look on the battle field. I see some twenty lie dead on the field where the Seventh drove them from their rifle pits…our Reg. had to go up on picket within fifty yards of the Rebel Battery Waggoner. This is the Battery…[we had to] make a charge on on July 16…Hugh McShene…wounded is [now] dead…Hill and Palmer are in Richmond prisoners. Nothing has been heard of Sergeant Hoar and Private Sherboro [Maxim H. Sherbeome] both…supposed to be killed…the day before we came away from Morris there was one hundred seventy six reported for duty…how I came out of the Fort Waggoner without being hit is a mystery…such a shower of bullets…".
