War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], Hilton Head, S. C., Aug. 20, 1863, in part: "…I am still with our company…there is not over 36 men for duty. When we came from New Haven there was ninety-three…now…six of them have been laid in the silent grave…seven have joined the regular battery and six have been detailed to extra duty, three killed in battle and two are in Columbia as prisoners of war, nine wounded…there are six or eight plantations here and the crops of corn, sweet potatoes, cotton and ground nuts (Peanuts) are all in a thriving condition…I am on Jenkins Planation yet doing picket duty…Fort Waggoner is a mass of ruins and Fort Sumter is made useless by our guns. They say the Rebs have nearly evacuated her. She is no use to the Rebs now. Two companies of the 24 Mass. Reg. made an attack on the Rebs rifle [pits] near Fort Waggoner where the sharpshooters were stationed, fifty in number and captured all but five…". VG
