War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], Hilton Head, S. C., Sept. 24, 1863, in part: "…all of Morris Island is…ours now. Fort Sumter is silenced, Fort Gregg, Battery Waggoner is ours and all is quiet at Morris Island now. General Gilmore is doing nothing as yet…he has lain still…he is going to have the Monitors and all the Gun Boats run up and engage Forts Moultrie and Johnson with the aide of Fort Waggoner and tow or three other batteries…and keep bombarding until they are surrendered, then commence on Charleston and if she don't surrender he is going to throw the hot shot and greek fire in there. James Island is fortified pretty strong…he will try to starve them off there. There is an expedition starting soon from here and Beaufort…to land on the main land and come up in the rear of Charleston…". VG
