War-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], Hilton Head, S. C., Apr. 2, 1864, in part: "…six secesh came in this week [as] deserters, twenty four took the Oath of Allegiance and are going North on the next steamer…Sergeant [Albert B.] Clark of Co. I…while we were in Jacksonville…married a Secesh lady. He has one wife at the North at the time, now he has deserted from here [on March 27, 1864] and left his wife…Hiram L. Grant [WIA Battery Wagner, 7/18/63 & major 3/07/65] is promoted to lieutenant and is now acting adjutant. He is a very good fellow was sorry to part with him from our Co…". VG
