War-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], Bermuda Hundred, Va., May 21, 1864, in part: "…Hiram L. Grant [WIA Battery Wagner, 7/18/63 & major 3/07/65] is our adjutant now. He makes a good officer. Clovis E. Hammond [MWIA (severe in the abdomen) Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64] has returned…and is in command of Co. G, Captain Tracy having been wounded. Since I came here we have had very hard times. We have either been on a march, fatigue, picket or [in] a fight ever since…I have been in three battles…and by the all wise Providence guarding me I have not received even a scratch [in less than a month he wound be killed instantly byb a sharpshooter]. Friday we experienced a pretty heavy shower of bullets from the Rebs for about two hours…and most of the time [we] was firing on the Rebs…the Rebs got the worst of it for we drove them. Quite a number of our boys got wounded. We had one officer wounded in the battle and since died, five of Co. A…got wounded. Andrew Gallup was wounded in the arm and side. Corporal James Holt…got a ball in the head. Don't know as he is living. He was taken to Fortress Monroe. A young man by the name of Shaw is missing belonging to this company and Benj. Heath of Putnam [is] wounded in the wrist [his] hand I think will have to be taken off. Walcott Wetherel has a slight wound in the arm…he is on duty [now]. Our Reg has lost ten of our officers, three killed, wounded and missing. I hear today of there being another Union victory with Grant near Richmond and that Grant gained twenty miles of ground near Richmond…this was will be over this year…". Near fine
