A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/2pp. 4to., written by Sgt. John G. Abbott [MWIA Battery Wagner, S. C., July 18, 1863], Co. D, 48th New York Vols. (Perry's Saints), Fort Pulaski, Sept. 28, 62, in small part: "…I wish…that I was in a Jersey Regt. I am sorry that they did not draft in Atlantic [County, New Jersey] for…those confounded cowards would have to go…we have had another reception to Gen. Terry of our Brigade…we were ordered to be ready…to form a line of battle on the Plank Road…the Boston then came up to the dock with the Gen. and staff on board. A Bdr. Genl's salute of 11 guns was fired from the ramparts. The Gen. and suit then landed and a similar salute…which was tendered to Gen. Mitchell…was tendered them…we had Gen. inspection in our Qrs. as it was too wet on the parade ground. It lasted about 2 hours at which time the Gen. left for Fernandina, Fla on the Boston. The Gen. was well pleased with our Regt. We all had on white cotton gloves which is furnished us by the Post fund…have any of your Jersey Regts got gloves…last Wednesday the Rebel steamer Ida came down with flag of truce. She brought Revd. Mr. Spencer & wife formerly of Brooklyn…there are contrabands coming in almost every day and occasionally deserters from the Rebel army. They report their army being totally demoralized…Comp. K…went up towards Bluffton on a reconnoisance. They discovered 3 Rebel cavalry pickets on the main land. They at once gave them some grape and canister…they skedaddled leaving everything behind…even their saddles, rifles, revolvers in fact their clothing which they had not on…we will see some fun for there are Secesh around about there…the Gen. [Mitchell] is liked by all. He is straightening up things here now…I see that the Rebels have been driven out of Md. and that they are getting whipped on all sides…and that [Stonewall] Jackson is about…cut off…I am anxious to see Virginia cleared of Secesh and the old flag again floating throughout her borders…McClellan will yet come out over all the rest of the Genls. notwithstanding their continued malice towards him…". Abbott's original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
