A good war-date Union officer's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by 2nd Lt. Frank W. Taylor, [WIA Fort Wagner 7/18/63 & KIA Olustee, Fl., 2/20/64], Co. B. 7th New Hampshire Vols. St. Helena Island, S. C., Jan. 4, 1863 [1864] to his cousin Moses M. Ordway of the 40th Mass. Vols., in part: "…our regiment left Morris Island on the 20th Dec. for this place. St. Helena is right opposite of Hilton Head. It is a very pleasant place…it seems quite a relief to get off of Morris Island. The duty was very hard on M. I. every day some part of the regiment were up to the front under fire of the Rebs. The regiment have got a new arm. It is call[ed] the Spencer Repeating Carbine. It is a very nice arm. It loads with seven cartridges at once…we are to go drilling in boats…I have been acting adjutant for the last month…my address is Lieut. Geo. W. Taylor Co. "B" 7th N. H. Vols., Hilton Head, S. C.".
