Excellent content 8 pg. letter from Maitlands mother, and brother, to Sergt. Maitland while serving with the 95th Ohio in Memphis, Tenn. Comes with the original transmittl cover. The first 5 1/2 pages were written by Mailands mother, and is dated September 18, 1864. The content is family related. Joseph's brother Grier has added an additional 1 1/2 pages to the letter, dated September 19, 1864. Griers content is exceptional, and reads in part: "I was somewhat surprised at the position you took in your last letter in regard to old "Abe" for I thought any thinking person could see where our country is going and has been going to for the last 4 years past. Going to destruction as fast as the fanatics in power at Washington can send it. The Constitution utterly disregarded in every part merely for party purposes. Abraham Lincoln was sworn to support the Constitution and has violated that oath which is pergery, almost as high a crime as treason. The writ of Habias Corpus suspended, arbitrary arrest by military law, and the imprisonment of citizens because they don't believe what the administration does. Suppression of the freedom of speech and of the press and a host of other unconstitutional acts. What's the use in fighting to suppress Rebellion in the south when we have lost our liberties at home. But I will discuss this at more length when I have more time and space. Sufficient to say I am for Gen. McClellan". Amazing content! As a note, James Maitland, the father of Joseph and Grier, was in the state legislature in Ohio, and took part in the Stephen Douglas campaign of 1860.
