A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. William A. Clark, Co. D, 19th Veteran Reserve Corps, [originally Co. C, 17th Conn. Vols.], U. S. Arsenal Hospital, Washington, D. C., Feb. 28, 1865, in part: "…there was 200 pieces of artillery captured at Charleston and 20 pieces at Wilmington also 3 blockade runners of John Bulls. Now there is only one place left on the Atlantic coast that we do not hold and that bis Mobile but we have the forts outside of the city…it is so well guarded [that] they can neither get out or in so this place is of no account…there has been a very heavy army sent to Grant & Sherman. 20,000 troops sent to Grant and 18,000 to Sherman, all from General Thomas' army from the west. They are all old troops and look well…the general opinion is…that the Rebellion is about played out…prisoners are arriving daily. There was one whole company of the 33rd North Carolina (with the exception of the Cpt and 2 privates) deserted and was sent to this city from Grant's army. They said they had fought for Jeff long enough. There was about 40…by the[ir] looks they were in a dreadful state, dirty, lousy, ragged and half starved wretches. Never did I see such a sight…they appeared to be happy to get here where they could see a civilized people…the boats are very busy now on the river. There was a very large gun sent from here to Key West, Florida. It was a 100 pound Parrott. The weight was near 10 tons. It is calculated to fire 6 or 7 miles…". VG
