General Orion A. Bartholomew Autograph Letter Signed "Orion." Three pages, 5" x 8", Head Quarters 109th U.S.C. Inft., April 30, 1865. Writing to his sister, Bvt. Brig. Gen. Bartholomew, of the 109th U.S. Colored Troops, praises his men during the Appomattox Campaign, in part: "....We had a most brilliant campaign for two or three weeks. The colored troop were upon the left of the line during the attack and participated. We then followed Lees army to Appomattox Court House where he surrendered....we returned and have gone into camp near Petersburg. How long we shall remain here is very uncertain, although we may stay all summer....".The 109th had recently participated in the fall of Pertersburg on April 2, and then pursued General Robert E. Lee and his army from April 3-9. The 109th was present at Appomattox Court House when Lee surrendered to General U.S. Grant. Bartholomew (1837-1919) mustered out of the army in March 1866 and practiced law in Iowa. A fine letter.
