A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Moses M. Ordway, 40th Mass. Vols., White House [Landing], Va., June 28, 1863 to his brother, in part: "…night before last we bivouacked at Cumberland Landing…it is a good place. Plenty of good water. The gunboats came up the river before us…we got right into the rebs before they knew it and began to pitch shell into them and they skedaddled…they left their breakfast…on the tables besides barrels of whiskey and one of ale. They had a big gun mounted upon an immense turntable. It was mounted on a car and track laid up to the table so they could run it on. It was in an unfinished state so they did not have a chance to use it…they pitched an Engine onto it and run it into Richmond…our cavalry captured Fitz Hugh Lee 150 prisoners and a train of baggage wagons…if they had been a half an hour sooner they might have taken a train of cars with 600 prisoners taken at Fredericksburg…going into Richmond. There is a large force concentrating here…we are going into Richmond…we are but 16 miles from it. If we do get in there we will stir up the monkeys…I hope before long to date you a letter from Richmond…". The original "U. S. Christian Commission" transmittal cover is included. VG
