A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Moses M. Ordway, 40th Mass. Vols., Warrenton, Va., July 27, 1863 to his brother, in part: "…we came here day before yesterday from…New Baltimore. It was a very hot day and they like to kill us all marching us, some did die. Gen. [George S.] Gordon is in command of the Division. We all hate him like the Devil. He don't consider a private and better than a dog. The men …will shoot him if they have a chance. I don't think much of your draft. About all from W. Amesbury are already exempt. I am glad Ike Little is drafted. It will take 300 out of him. Some of our officers have gone to Massachusetts after…drafted men for this regt. Out of over 1000 men we have about 600 for duty. We have an old regt in our Div. with only 60 men after the battle of Gettysburg. The 19th Massachusetts only 35 men. Some of these old regiments in the Army of the Potomac are nearly annihilated. They...say that we have got Lee in another tight place where where he has got to fight to get out. We might have had him in Maryland if our Gens. had been a little smarter. They left a hole just large enough for him to crawl through…". The original transmittal cover is included. VG
