A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 1 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Moses M. Ordway, 40th Mass. Vols., "Before Petersburg, [Va.], Aug. 21,1864," to his brother concerning a near miss while writing "this letter," in part: "I arrived here this morning…we are right on the front. I was in the trenches this forenoon during a bit of an engagement. The bullets rattled good. Balls are continually flying over the camp which is half a mile to the rear. The boys think I am in for luck. I just sat down to write this letter on the head of a barrel when a ball sent through the barrel within ten inches of my leg…". we are right in sight of the city…".
