A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Major Moses M. Ordway, 40th Mass. Vols., Chapins Farm, Va., Dec. 11,1864 to his brother, in part: "…we have moved our camp about a half mile to the rear. We have got some good log cabins built…we are under arms about half the time. Dutch Gap is all ready to let the water in. The Niggers were massed down their a few days ago. A part of our Reg were ordered down…we have been expecting a grand move for a number of days. Yesterday morning [we] were ordered to fall in which we did so quick that we did not have time to take anything not a mouthful of grub…we found the Rebs advancing. The cavalry were in advance of us who kept a skirmishing nearly all day without bringing on a general engagement…this morning we found the Jonnies had fell back…we consider our selves lucky to get out if it so easy…everything is all ready for a grand forward movement…we are about 5 or 6 miles from Richmond and about 4 from Bermuda Hundred…". The original transmittal cover is included. VG
