A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Sgt. Moses M. Ordway, 40th Mass. Vols., Chapins Farm, Va., Feb. 16, 1865 to his brother concerning a drunken state of affairs at division head quarters, in part: "…we have been inspected again and declared the best reg. in the Division…our division has been reviewed twice in two weeks…after the review all the officers in the Div. were invited to Head Quarters where they all took a drink. General Ord congratulated them upon the good appearance of their respective commands and then they took another drink. The Gen. then proceeded to say that he was happy to see the good feeling existing among the officers of his command…then they took another drink. A speech was then made by Gen. Gibbons and they drink once more. Gen. Ord then around up by saying that he had petitioned…the president to have us all paid off upon [which] all those that were not already too drunk drank once more. It was the grandest old drunk of the season. Gen. Ord was as tight as a pig. The doctor…said it was a great time…to hear…it was held in a log chapel…we went on horse back. It was a corduroy road all the way. the corduroy road is built of logs all of our roads here are built so, otherwise teams could not move on account of the mud…enclosed you will find a specimen of Rebel money that I got…it is rather the worse for wear…". The original "specimen of Rebel money" is included being a 25-cent piece of the State of South Carolina fractional currency while the original transmittal cover is also present. VG (3 pieces)
