Vols., Chapins Farm, Va., Feb. 23,1865 to his brother, in part: "…Charleston & Columbia have gone up. A salute of one hundred guns was fired…yesterday at twelve o'clock in honor of the event. The exchange of prisoners is going on everyday. The point of exchange is Dutch Gap.The doctor went down yesterday. He said it was a worse sight than they get up in Harpers Weekly. Some of them could hardly crawl, almost naked…they will not let us compete now to be the best Regnt. We take the prize every time so we are to be shut out for a fortnight…".
