A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Major Moses M. Ordway, 40th Mass. Vols., Richmond, [Va.], April 3, 1865 to his brother concerning the Fall of Richmond, in part: "…we are in the city of Richmond. The Johnnies have all cleaned out. They thought it best to get up and git. Lee, Longstreet & Hill [A. P. Hill was actually killed the day before] left this morning at three o'clock. They left a good lot of their artillery in the forts. A part of the city is in flames. The arsenal is on fire and the shell & powder are exploding with a noise like cannonading. We have not been through the main part of the city yet. They blew up the gunboats before they left. April 4th. I went up into the city last night it is a great place…Libby Prison is in ashes…the Rebs burned all the arms before they left to keep them from falling into our hands…". The original "U. S. Christian Commission" transmittal cover is included. VG
