A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 1 1/2pp. 4to., written by Sgt. Major Moses M. Ordway, 40th Mass. Vols., Manchester, Va., May 7, 1864 [1865] to his brother, in part: "…we (the 24th Corps) received the 2nd & 5th Corps in Richmond yesterday it was a great show. It took six hours to pass us and they marched in column…they were very large Corps…we shall have to pay the same honor to the whole army which will pass through…Sherman's army arrived here this morning. It is tough business this receiving troops. We stood six hours in line on the pavement with a scorching sun over head. We have had reviews & receptions any quantity since we came to Richmond…we shall stay here till the army has all passed through and then follow on…the 1st Heavy Artillery camped one night near by us. I saw Co. "E" but there were but very few left. Gus Bailey, Dick Dailey…that was all. The Mass. Reg'nts that were here were 1st H. A., 10th Batt., 11th Infy, 19th, 20th, 28th, 32nd, 39, 61st….they will march through to Alexandria…Frank Alger has got back. He was supposed killed at Olustee…". The original "Official Business U. S.
