Four page letter written by Grier Maitland in Ohio, to his brother Sergt. Joseph Maitland in Memphis, Tenn. while serving with the 95th Ohio Infantry. The letter, dated June 8, 1864, has excellent content, in part: "I suppose you are on the March again. I hope you may successful in taking Old Forest without much loss of life. Our armies remain about the same, I believe only gaining a little every day. I hope we are successful in the next battles in Virginia and Georgia, altho Gen. Grant reocuppies precisely the same ground that McClellan did two years ago, and I think had Gen. "Mac" had the same number of men than that Gen. Grant has now he would undoubtably taken Richmond, because since that time the Rebels have fortified, so that they have now three lines of defenses around that city. But I cannot think but what Gen. Grant after a while will succeed in taking it. Already two candidates are in the field for the next Presidency. Gen. Fremont was nominated over a week ago at Cleveland, O. by the Radical abolitionists and has accepted provided no other man but Lincoln is brought out by the Union Convention at Baltimore, and that met today and yesterday, and today's paper says Lincoln is ahead by considerable. I hope he is nominated for that will divide the Republican Party and then I think a good Democrat will oust them both. There is a good deal of talk that Grant will be brought out by the Chicago Convention and I hope he may for I think he will be elected then.....". A fantastic letter, with riviting campaign content. Fine condition, and includes the original transmittal cover. As a note, James Maitland, the father of Joseph and Grier, was in the Ohio state legislature, and took part in the Stephen Douglas campaign in 1860.
