A good war-date Union soldier’s ink inscribed 4pp. 8vo., letter, on patriotic stationery, written by Corp. James S. Lindley, Co. E, 75th Ohio Vol. Camp Chase, Ohio, Feb. 7, 1863 concerning being among Confederate prisoners at Union prison Camp Chase, in part: “…[the men] in camp find divertment in card playing…I have…resolved not to…engage in that amusement…I was told when I came that I was exchanged…I have seen the Secesh prisoners that have come to this place…we had to move out of our barracks…which was in one of the prison yards to make room for them. Brig. Gen. [Thomas J.] Churchill and other officers taken at Arkansas Post [they] now occupy them. There was three Secesh ladys at Nashville…brought in here…a mother and two daughters…they are splendid looking women, but they are keeping house on a very plain style. They get the same rations that soldiers do…letters are lost here in Camp Chase by passing through so many hands…”. After being captured at the battle of Second Bull Run on Aug. 30, 1862, Lindley was exchanged, and spent several weeks at Camp Chase awaiting the arrival of a military paymaster. His short stay there allowed him to experience life inside a Union prison camp. He returned to his regiment and served in the battles of Chancellorsville, and Getttysburg. Minor adhesive stains negligibly affect the content, else very good.
