Infantry, captured at Brashear City, Louisiana on June 23, 1863, 8p. octavo, pencil, Baton Rouge, ‘The Capitol of Louisiana’ March 18 - 29th, 1863, in part: “...On Sat. night they had heavy firing 18 miles NE from here at Port Hudson. We saw the flash of cannons plain...a great fight is expected soon...Mr. Hale the owner of the planation where we are is a Union man & owned 90 slaves he has gone to England & the Negroes are scattered...The woods back are full of cattle pigs & rebels...Dogs answer the purpose of door bells - every man & nigger has one...The surgeon & chaplain are both arrested for getting and keeping drunk...the firing at Port Hudson on the 17th amounted to nothing - 4 of our gun boats passed above safely...The Mississippi our men fired to prevent the rebels taking - & 30 of our men were lost in here...The Rebels drove our pickets in this morning - but did no damage. We are not afraid of them in the least...The report is we are going to New Orleans...” Much more. VG.
