Rare 1860 Abraham Lincoln Torch, measuring 8 1/2" x 9 1/2". This hollow eagle brass-plated torch contained kerosene, which fueled two wicks projecting from the wings. Held by a swiveling wire mount atop a pole, this torch and others like it were carried in the torchlight parades and rallies which were a critical element of 19th century American politics. This particular variety is prized both for its distinctive eagle shape and because it was known to have been used in Lincoln's campaign (photos exist of Lincoln parade marchers holding such torches). The torch is all original, having the original wicks and swivel mount. There is no discoloration or corrosion often found on these torches. Also, more often than not, the breast area of the eagle is heavily dented or pushed in. This superb example has non of these condition issues. One would be hard pressed to find a finer example. At auction these rare campaign artifacts have sold for upwards to $7,500.00.
