A great war-date letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Mrs. Pheebe J. Clark [possible nurse], Washington, April 14, 1865, in part: "…I was up in the city this morning. In riding in the street cars I saw a man with both arms off. He was very young nothing but a boy in looks. A day or two since I saw a train of ambulances with wounded…it was a hard sight to see the soldiers with their heads and arms tied up some with out an arm, some lying on stretchers to sick to be moved from it to the wagon. Billy came to see me Sunday and staid until 9 o'clock at night…I have not been at the Arsenal yet…my hand trembles so I can hardly write. I think I drink too much. It is reported General Grant and General Lee came in yesterday. I have seen a great many Rebel prisoners some have taken the Oath of Allegiance some had not. Those that had not had guards with them…". VG
