This true to life "mad hatter" shot and killed John Wilkes Booth. On April 26, 1865, Sergeant Boston Corbett of the 16th New York Cavalry raised his Colt revolver to shoot John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln's infamous assassin was cornered in a burning tobacco barn on the Virginia farm of Richard Garrett. Ignoring orders to take Booth alive, the over-zealous Corbett fatally wounded the fugitive with the justification that "God Almighty directed me." This photo shows Corbett Seated with his left arm resting on an American flag. His kepi can also be seen next to his left arm. Corbett's name is printed on the mount below the image, albeit spelled incorrectly. A fine image with an 1865 cancelled revenue stamp on the verso.
