Scarce pre printed card sent out from Mark Twain declining a speaking invitation, with the original transmittal cover with "S.L. Clemens, Hartford, Conn." return address. The cancellation date is September 1890, and is addressed to "W.F.E. Hager, Auburn, RI". According to the "Mark Twain Project", Twain started using these pre printed cards to decline the ever numerous requests he would get for speaking and appearance engagements in 1880. The 3" x 5 1/8" card reads "Hartford, Wednesday, Dear Sir, In reply I am obliged to say that I have quitted the platform permanently. With thanks for the compliment of your invitation, I am Truly yours Mark Twain". This is the first example of this rare Twain piece we have auctioned, fine.
