COHAN, George M. (1878-1942). American entertainer, playwright, composer, lyricist, actor, singer, dancer, and producer.A wonderful collection of Cohan material, approximately 15 pieces, including the following:1. A 1920 contract signed "Geo. M. Cohan" for an actress appearing in the chorus of his musical, "Mary." It opened at the Knickerbocker Theater on Oct. 18, 1920 and closed in April 1921 after 220 performances...plus; 2. A 1900 Library of Congress document awarding a copyright for his play, "The Governor's Son."...plus; 3. A 1907 U.S. Patent Office document confirming application for a trademark application made by Cohan & (Sam) Harris for the title of "Weekly Papers & Publications," a newspaper issued by them covering their various Broadway efforts. (3 pc)...plus; 4. Telegrams (sender's retained copies) sent by Cohan. (2 pc)...plus; 5. Two condolence letters sent on the death of his father (an emotional scene by James Cagney in "Yankee Doodle Dandy" was based on his father's death)....plus; 6. Contemporary copy of Cohan's marriage papers, including approval by the Catholic Church for Cohan to marry a woman outside of his faith.
