Consisting of over 20 lengthy letters and 16 postcards mailed by John B. Foster, M.D. of Enzor, Mississippi between 1904 and 1911 to Miss Bonnie Eloise Manney of Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Dr. Foster, formerly a private in Co. "E," 15th Mississippi Infantry, participated in many of the Western Theater's most notable engagements. In his later years he was active in veterans' affairs and became acquainted with Miss Manney, whom he addresses as "My Dear Little Friend." The letters, many of which are transcribed, form a detailed narrative memoir of antebellum, wartime and current events. Most immediately striking are the large humorous cartoons of people (including himself) with which Foster illustrated his correspondence. This archive presents a unique informal glimpse into the heart and mind of an articulate Confederate veteran who wanted to leave a record for posterity. Light age toning throughout, very good condition.
