Abigail Adams (November 22, 1744 - October 28, 1818) was the wife of John Adams, the first Vice President, and second President, of the United States, and the mother of John Quincy Adams, the sixth President. She is now designated the first Second Lady and second First Lady of the United States, although these titles were not in use at the time. Beautifully executed painting on ivory of Mrs. Adams with a card identifying her with the date "1775". Surrounding the image is what looks to be polished onyx, set in brass. Measures 7/8" x 1", with original pin and clasp on the reverse. Along with the pin is a place card for Mrs. & Mr. John Adams, possibly for a wedding or party for the woman printed on the card "S. Lizzie Sampson". The card measures 3" x 5". Both of these pieces came out of a Massachusetts estate, south of Boston. Early Adams material is prohibitively rare
