Exceedingly rare photograph of First Lady Lucy W. Hayes inscribed and signed by her husband President Rutherford B. Hayes. The photograph, being a "Boudoir" image, measures a substantial 7 1/2" x 13", and has a Sarony, New York photographers imprint, and the date "1877", and most probably signed while Hayes was President. President Hayes has inscribed and signed the image "To "Miss. Alberta Manning Houghton, with kindestregards, Rutherford B. Hayes". This signed photograph came out of the Houghton estate in Massachusetts. Alberta Houghton was involved in the Women's suffrage and the temperance movement, as was First Lady Lucy Hayes. The inscription and signature are a tad light, due to the fine pen "nib" that was used. Overall a fine and extremely rare signed photograph. President Hayes has signed his entire name, not the usual "R.B. Hayes" that one usually encounters. We only know of only one other example extant of this image signed by President Hayes, that example being signed to Hayes Secretary of State William Evarts. A great opportunity to acquired a rare First Lady photograph signed by her husband....the President!
