Stephen Grover Cleveland (March 18, 1837 – June 24, 1908) was the 22nd and 24th President of the United States; and, therefore was the only US president to serve two nonconsecutive terms (1885–1889 and 1893–1897) and to be counted twice in the numbering of the presidents. Letter signed, 1pg., September 29, 1888, 5" x 8", light toning along edge, small split at right edge fold, else fine. Comes with original transmittal cover. During the heat of the 1888 Presidential campaign President Cleveland sends a letter of thanks to E.W.D. Enders of Fisherville, PA. thanking him for a photograph of a pole raising by the Cleveland & Thurman Club of Jackson Township. At these campaign events a "pole raising" meant to raise a campaign flag or banner at a political event, parade, or rally, in support of a candidate. The letter reads "I have received your note of the 28th instant and beg to acknowledge your courtesy in sending me a photograph of the recent pole raising by your club. Very truly yours, Grover Cleveland". Cleveland went on to lose the race to Republican Benjamin Harrison, but did make a come back and win the 1892 campaign. Rarely do letters from sitting Presidents regarding campaign events appear on the market. Included with this scarce letter is a cabinet card photograph of Cleveland, along with three cards signed by his Vice Presidents (Thomas Hendricks - 1885, Allen Thurman -lost in 1888, and Adlai Stevenson - 1893). The cards are fine save for some old remnants on the back. A wonderful addition to any political or Presidential letter collection.
