The 25th President of the United States, William McKinley, was shot and fatally wounded on September 6, 1901, inside the Temple of Music on the grounds of the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. McKinley was shaking hands with the public when he was shot by Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist. The President died on September 14 from gangrene caused by the bullet wounds. This iconic funeral piece is a recent find by our consignor while in Canton, Ohio. This large piece of mourning draping measures 3" x 6 1/2", and comes with the original note, which reads: "From the floral designs for President McKinley 1901. A bit of the draping from the court house where the body laid in state at Canton, Ohio, U.S.A. Shot at Buffalo - 4pm Sept. 6, Died "........"(Buffalo) 2:15am "(Sept) 14, Buried at Canton 2pm "(Sept) 19". While small fragments of mourning draping appear on the market from time to time from Lincoln's, Garfield's, and McKinley's funeral, having the opportunity to acquire such a large piece from a Presidential funeral is virtually unheard of.
