A complete and authentic newspaper, 21” x 28”, “The Wide West”, Fourth of July Illustrated edition, San Fancisco 1856, 4pp., never bound. This weekly publication is well illustrated with one of the most important topics in California history, the shooting death of James King which resulted in the establishment of the second San Francisco Vigilance Committee and changed the politics of the city. James King of William (1822–1856) was a crusading San Francisco, California, Daily Evening Bulletin newspaper editor. King used his paper to crusade fanatically against immorality and corruption and his reputation of unimpeachable integrity as well as his blistering and frequently scurrilous editorials to turn on unscrupulous characters. Illustrated are the Assassination of James King, Funeral Procession of James King, Delivery of Casey and Cora to the Vigilance Committe, Hanging of Casey and Cora, and many other early San Fransico images.
