A complete and authentic issue of the Niles Weekly Register, December 30, 1820, 16pp., disbound, VG. From the interior a 1-1/4 column report “The Slave Trade.” The report covers a presentation in the Federal Senate by SC Senator Smith regarding the slave trade. In it, Smith refers to James DeWolfe, a Rhode Island slave trader. In part, “a compliment to Rhode Island for having been bitter against slave-holders ..This however he believed could not be the temper or opinion of the majority from the election of Mr. James DeWolfe, as a member of the senate, as he had accumulated an immense fortune by the slave trade....” Smith then presented three charts published here. The first shows the number of slave ships that came into Charleston over a three year period, segregated by point of origin. First, Charleston with 61 ships; second Rhode Island with 59 ships. Then the second chart shows the number of slaves imported, showing that of the 39,075 slaves, 7,958 were from Rhode Island slavers. “It would show the senate that those people who most depreciate the evils of slavery and traffic in human flesh, when a profitable market can be found, can sell human flesh with as easy conscience as they sell other articles.”
