A complete and authentic issue of Harper’s Weekly, July 4, 1863, 16pp., disbound, near fine. This is one of the most impactful issues of Harpers for the Black Americana collector. One of the most impactful issues of Harpers shows three engravings of a negro named Gordon, showing the man “as he underwent the surgical examination” previous to being mustered into the service — his back furrowed and scarred with the traces of a whipping administered on Christmas Day last. Gordon escaped his master in Mississippi by rubbing himself with onions to throw off the bloodhounds. Also, when this issue comes up, one of the important reports is rarely mentioned. From the interior is 1/2 page engraving captioned “Raid of Second South Carolina Volunteers Among the Rice Plantations on the Combahee, SC.” On a separate page is the brief report, “Raid Among the Rice Plantations.” Not mentioned in the report is the fact that Harriet Tubman, who had been a scout for the 2nd South Carolina Volunteers, accompanied the troops and assisted in securing the freedom of an estimated 700 slaves.
