Newspaper, a complete and authentic issue of The New York Caucasian, May 2, 1863, 4pp., disbound, VG. Below the masthead, “I hold that this government was made on the WHITE BASIS by WHITE MEN and for the benefit of WHITE MEN and their Posterity Forever.” This newspaper was repeatedly suppressed by the Lincoln government. From tan interior page, “News of the Day - Illinios,” is a letter signed by “Copperhead.” In it in part, “This city is overrun with free negroes , sent her by Government agents contrary to the laws of the state. But what rights have States under the rule of Abraham the First? Has not King Abraham put his foot down ... Gov. Andrew’s negro recruiting officers have been here for the past six weeks, recruiting ‘free Americans of African descent’ ..All they could muster was 48 and 8 of these bolted .. For my part, I wish the governor would transport every sable son from this city and state. “Then, under “What Shall Be Done With Them?” we have the following. In part, “This reminds me that the General Commanding is perplexed about the disposition of Les Noirs Americaines. Clouds of of negro women and children are gathered within our lines and are a burden. ... Well we are Copperhead and we will make a suggestion. Let them alone, leave them with their legal, constitutional and natural protectors, their masters. Let Mr. Lincoln issue a proclamation to the people of the South declaring that his troops are sent there to uphold the laws instead of violating them ...”
