Newspaper, a complete and authentic issue of The New York Caucasian, April 25, 1863, 4pp., disbound, clear mending tape repairs in two places, rough at spine. Still an unusual and scarce title. Below the masthead, “I hold that this government was made on the WHITE BASIS by WHITE MEN and for the benefit of WHITE MEN and their Posterity Forever.” This newspaper was repeatedly suppressed by the Lincoln government. From the front page, “Negro Insurrection” in the form of a letter signed by “An Ex-Navy Officer,” relates the horrors. In small part, “I arrived at Norfolk .. just as the news of a negro insurrection .. reached the city. ... and if these men who are so anxious to put firearms in the hands of negroes, to murder white women and children, could have witnessed the scene ... I think they would have changed their views. ... The negroes selected court day ... to murder with axes and knives, the women and children. ... So it will be now, when ever negro soldiers find defenseless women and children, they will murder them; and when the negroes are captured ... they will be shot and their black bodies roasted.”
