A complete and authentic issue of The Newark Weekly Journal, Tuesday, May 12, 1863, 4pp., disbound, fine. From the front page, “West Coast of Africa - The Slave trade,” brings another horrific account of the slavers. In part, “...Trade at Langos was almost entirely suspended on account of internal wars. It was formerly believed that these wars were prosecuted with the object of securing captives for the slave trade ... One of the most disgusting and cruel cases of slave trade cruelity ever known on the West coast of Africa occurred last month. ... American made schooner of 120 tons commanded by Spaniards ran into some port on the South Coast and there embarked 542 slaves. After being out only 14 days she got short of water and put into Amadon ... The schooner was boarded ... So many human beings being stowed in a small vessel which was only four and a half feet between decks ... dysentry broke out among them and from the date of their embarkation to the date of their siezure, 180 fell victim ... and from the date of her arrival in Sierra Leone, 98 more died. ......” Unusual to have slaver ship reports this late.
