A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Corp. Joseph H. Prime Co. F, 13th New Hampshire Vols., Washington, Oct. 5, 1863 to his comrade Pvt. Lemuel P. Foss. Prime was in Washington waiting to be examine for an officer's position of one of the many USCT regiments being formed at the time. He passed and was appointed lieutenant in the 7th USCT and was wounded in battle at Fort Gilmer, Va., Sept. 29, 1864, in part: "Another week in Washington…expecting to be examined…got the same answer…that perhaps I should be examined this week or next……I am not going to stay here any longer after that…I meet[?] a Provost Guard. We see some citizens brought up to the Old Capitol Prison to take the oath of Allegiance. We…get an occasional glance at Miss. Bella Boyd the Rebel Female Spy that is confined in Carroll Prison…she is the perfect beauty. She holds a commission as a major in the Rebel army…a smarter looking woman I never saw…there is about thirty ot be examined before I can get an examination…and if there are any commissioned officers to be examined they are examined first…there may be half a dozen of them…before me beside the enlisted men…it cost seven dollars to get up here. Half a dollar from Norfolk to Fort Monroe, five dollars from Fort Monroe to Baltimore…direct to No. 116 East Capitol Street…the 153rd N. Y. Vols. is just going by…Joseph…". VG
