A complete and authentic issue of Harper’s Weekly, August 5, 1865, 16pp., disbound VG. From the interior two very dramatic engravings promoting voting rights for black veterans. On the left, a full page engraving of a Confederate officer kneeling before Lady Columbia, with caption “PARDON. Columbia ‘Shall I Trust These men.’” Then on the facing page, “FRANCHISE. And not this man ?” Lady Columbia presents a black soldier who has lost his leg. President Johnson issued pardons for Confederate officers in May 1865. Yet voting rights for blacks would be delayed 5 years.
