An amazing piece of history! A nine page folio size election return document form Remsen, New York, November 2, 1869. These are the election returns for various offices, including State Treasurer, Comptroller, Prison inspector, etc. There are also several ballots attached for various offices including one for Horace Greeley, who was running for Comptroller. Of the utmost importance are the ballots concerning voting rights for free black men in the town. The vote was to allow black men to vote if they owned at least $250.00 worth of real estate. One of the ballots is titled "Constitution - Suffrage. Against the Property Qualification for Colored Men". That ballot had forty in favor. The other ballot is titled "Constitution - Property Qualification. For the Property Qualification for Colored Men". That ballot had sixteen in favor. Statewide, the issue to allow Black Men to vote without the property requirement FAILED by 283403 to 249,802. A rare document. In fine condition save for toning where the voting ballots are adhered
