A complete and authentic issue of the New York Tribune, April 28, 1871, 8pp., disbound, VG. From the front page, a 1-1/2 column report, “South Carolina Ku-Klux.” In part, “... negro militia were armed by the governor just before the last election to intimidate the whites. ... The blacks voted in a body and they had so large a majority that the whites were convinced that there had been fraud. ... bad men were elected ... a School Commissioner that can not read. ... The next morning, the Captain [black militia man] got his company together and marched to Chester ...The Negroes camped in a grove.. A party of armed white men came down in the night ... seeing the blacks encamped ... commenced firing on them. ... The next morning they were attacked by 200 whites ... 19 blacks killed. .... It matters not whether it is called White Brotherhood, Invisible Empire, Ku-Klux-Klan ... its purpose is the same... to intimidate blacks that at the next election they will not dare vote ...”
