A complete issue of Harper’s Weekly, September 2, 1876, 16pp., disbound, VG. From the interior, a full page verticle engraving, “Is this a republican form of government? Is this protecting life, liberty, or property? Is this the equal protection of the laws?” by Thomas Nast. the image is of a pleading freedman with several killed freedman stacked up before him. In the background, a sign “The White Liners Were Here” referencing the Klan. Nast was commenting on the continued brutality of freedman as exemplfied in the Hamburg Massacre.
