It actually advises that "…for the past year [this regiment has been] lying at the City of Baltimore and likely to remain there during the War." (!!) Circa 1863 or early 1864 recruiting poster for the "FIRST CONNECTICUT CAVALRY." 17½ x 23 with large, fierce American eagle atop two inch headlines "PREPARE TO MOUNT !" Advises that men of the outfit who had "reenlisted for the war and now on furlough" have opened a "VOLUNTEER RECRUITING OFFICE AND SOLDIERS' RESORT…FOR THE TOWN OF BRIDGEPORT [with address of office and]…WILL GIVE…INFORMATION AND ADVICE TO ALL WISHING TO ENLIST." Also urges "…Before the Draft overtakes you, drop in and find out about…enlisting, bounty, etc. and hear your old friends relate their experiences in the field fighting Lee, Longstreet, Old Stonewall, Ashby, Stewart…under the gallant Rosecrans, Fremont, Pope, Siegel…" Bridgeport, Conn. printer's signature at bottom. Normal light aging. Had been torn vertically about 60 percent in center with old tape repair that has caused a brown stain that same length through the center. Few small tape repairs on the extreme edges of the blank margins; very minor. All intact; no words or letters lacking. Very unusual history of that regiment, which saw a great deal of action. From 1862 to early 1864 it was headquartered in Baltimore as the poster stated…but it did have many forays into Virginia, seeing considerable action. From March 1864 to end of the war it saw a tremendous amount of hard fighting in just about every campaign in Virginia, through to Appomattox. A handsome example of the type with a very odd and artful enticement to avoid the draft and stay safely ensconced in Baltimore.
