4 lengthy pages; neatly penned, datelined "Hdqtrs Hospital, 91'st Reg. Ohio Volunteer Infantry / Camp Fayetteville, West VA, Sept. 8, 1863" on fancy printed letterhead with eagle, shield, ship and other illus. motifs. To his wife: "Rumor says we will be moved down the valley…very soon but we act just as if we expected to remain in this place during the war. Col. Turley has been horse racing. He won a hundred dollars…Capt. Neil and I put in after the running horses and almost caught up with them. We could have done so, but were afraid of breaking up the race…there is intimation that the parties will be court-martialed for gambling…" Has strong desire to be home: "…am in the habit of construing dreams, contrary to the importance of them…I dreamed I was there with you last night…" and more about sickness in camp "…just cleared Ward No. 3 to allow a man to die undisturbed. His wife is here with him and has killed him by overfeeding…I suppose she will go home and tell how inefficient the medical corps of this regiment is…" The 91st Ohio saw much action 1862-1865 through many Va., West Va., and Md. Campaigns. Exc. +. Light aging.
