CARVER, GEORGE WASHINGTON (1864 - 1943) Black-American botanist and the son of slaves, Carver worked his way through school to become a leader in agricultural research and found hundreds of products made possible by the cultivation of peanuts and sweet potatoes. A large group of George Washington Carver letters written to Marvin Teel from 1935-1939 to include (1) Autograph Letter Signed, (20) Typed Letters Signed, (2) secretarial signed typed letters, (2) letters of introduction regarding Marvin Teel. Most of the letters retain their original envelopes (17) which are present. In addition there are three 8”x 10” copy photos. The consistant theme throughout these letters are two-fold. First, clearly Carver had a genuine affection for “My dear boy” as he often referred to Teel. Secondly, Carver provides encouragement and introductions for Teel regarding Teel’s patented invention, the Harrow. We will impart a few glimpses into this archive. April 17, 1935 “ ... I shall be so happy to see my dear boy Marvin ... I had 82 visitors yesterday ...” July 9, 1935, “ ... I am glad to see only one thing in front of you and that is success ... I hope you will investigate the blue associated with the minerals most carefully ...” September 14, 1935, “You evidently have some interesting deposits. Some contain iron, others manganese ...a fine grade of silica. two contain sugar quartz which is an indication of gold ... contains imperfect rubies ...” November 13, 1935, “The specimens may be termed Pyrolucite .. is used in the manufacture of steel ... I am pleased to know that you have been offered $1000 for your Harrow.” (Teel had patented the Harrow October 29, 1935). may 11, 1936, “I am watching with interest the development of the harrow, and trust that you will be able to get something out of it.” June 27, 1936 “I shall be interested to know what news you get from The Ford Motor Company.” November 26, 1938 “... finds me in the hospital yet. I have been here since last may. ... I had run down to the point where the physicians despaired ... no hope for my life when I went into the hospital ...” January 5, 1939 “Mr. Ford is interested ina a project at Ways Station Georgia ... it would be transmitted to Mr. Edsel Ford ...” Then, there are two phos of Carver with henry Ford and a third of Carver with Eleanor Roosevelt.
