…WE HAVE HEARD THE GOOD NEWS FROM VICKSBURG &GETTSBURGH [sic] AND HOPE TO BE ABLE TO PRESENT YOU CHARLESTON IN A WEEK…so ends this single sheet (both sides) of extremely bold penned letter by Capt. William M. McArthur of the 8'th Maine Vol. Infantry from his "Office of Prov Marshal / Hilton Head, S.C. July 13, 1863" to his father. Mostly concerning repayments he wishes father to make on his behalf for debts owed: "…I intend to send you all my earnings in the service retaining enough to live on myself…I am in great haste having received 105 rebel prisoners from Morris Island…" Normal aging. The outfit saw considerable action with McArthur rising to colonel of it. His full signature on letter and docketed on edge in father's hand with the date received.
