A complete issue of the New York Daily Tribune October 4, 1851, 8pp., disbound, VG. From the interior a full column “SLAVE CATCHING,” reports on the capture and rescue of Jerry (William Henry) a fugitive slave from Missouri. In small part, “A negro man named Jerry was arrested here today, claimed by a man named McHenry ... The crowd as if moved by one impulse, effected the resue as completely and as successfully as could be done. ... bettered down the inside partition which let them into the room where sat the poor fugitive heavily chained and surrounded by marshalls ... He was taken up on shoulders of the crowd amid the most deafening hurrahs ... The cheif movers in the crowd were negroes ...” History advises that Harriet Tubman was involved in this resue.
