ON PICKET AT POACHERS PLAIN / PORT ROYAL ISLAND, SC, JANUARY 3, 1864 is heading of single sheet (both sides) letter entirely penned in the bold hand of Capt. William McArthur of the 8'th Maine Infantry. (8 x 10) "…Left Beaufort and now engaged in picketing along the shore of this island opposite the Rebel mainland. It is rather tame business as the rebels who are in sight opposite, never trouble us. We are nevertheless watchful and I believe could not be surprised. It is rather tedious as we have to visit our several picket posts at night…shall be glad when we can return to our own camp. I haven't had an adventure to relate." Boldly signed "William" however his father has docketed it in the upper margin (as he did with all his letters) with his full name "William M. McArthur" and brief two lines about what the letter related and date received. Exc. +. Light aging.
