Two page letter (both sides) by Capt. William McArthur from "Gloucester Point opposite Yorktown, Virginia April 17, 1864, to father: "…We sailed from Hilton Head…the N.H. 4'th also on board. We had but 12 hours notice before embarking from Beaufort. My regiment numbered 527…arrived at Fortress Monroe; reported to Gen. Butler and were ordered up here. Of course you suspect our destination. …Landed last night and getting into camp today…up all night…am going to express home all spare baggage. Shall probably be allowed to carry a valise only. We expect to be joined by the Veterans…at present we are under Gen'l Wistar. I like him very much…" Signed "William" but lengthy docketing on reverse of page 4 by his father including full name, details of letter and date received. Just a few days after written under Gen'l Wistar, the 8'th Maine took part in the unfortunate movement that resulted in the "bottling up" of Butler at Bermuda Hundred (often called "the historic bottle").
